Second Circuit Chief Judge Melissa Morgan is honored to announce that Brian Shinkle has been sworn-in as the Edwards County Resident Circuit Judge. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Edwards County Courthouse where Illinois Supreme Court Justice David Overstreet administered the Oath of Office in the presence of a crowded courtroom of family, friends, and colleagues.

The judgeship became vacant upon the untimely, tragic death of Michael J. Valentine on November 5, 2024. The Honorable Justice David Overstreet appointed Albion attorney Brian Shinkle to fill this vacancy pending the next judicial election. Pursuant to the authority of section 12, subsection (c) of article VI of the Illinois Constitution, the Illinois Supreme Court entered Order M.R. 1403 appointing Brian Shinkle to the position of Resident Circuit Judge, Edwards County, Second Judicial Circuit effective February 10, 2025.

Judge Shinkle commented on his appointment to the judiciary stating, “I am honored by the appointment as Resident Circuit Judge of Edwards County. It is one of the most humbling experiences of my life. My appointment follows a terrible tragedy. Judge Michael Valentine‘s contribution to our lives will not be forgotten. I bring to the bench the character, values, and work ethic developed through my Marine Corps career and 30 years practicing law in Edwards County. I look forward to serving the people of the Second Circuit.”

Chief Judge Morgan added, “On behalf of the Judges of the Second Circuit, we congratulate Judge Shinkle on his appointment and swearing-in. His integrity, diverse legal experience, and commitment to public service throughout his life are the qualities that made him an exceptional attorney. He now brings these attributes to the judiciary, and we are honored to serve alongside him.”

The Second Judicial Circuit is comprised of twelve (12) counties: Crawford, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne, and White.
