Second Judicial Circuit of Illinois Traffic Safety Program - Defensive Driving Classes

Section 5-6-1 of the Unified Code of Corrections (730 ILCS 5/5-6-1) provides that certain defendants charged with traffic offenses may be eligible for a sentence of a supervision under sub-section (c) of section 5-6-1 upon completion of a traffic safety program approved by the Court under standards set by the Conference of Chief Circuit Judges. The following programs have been approved by the Conference of Chief Circuit Judges and provided by the National Safety Council. Please check the web sites below for dates and times classes are available:

  • Northwestern University Center for Public Safety - 4-hour defensive driving course offered in the classroom in Mt. Vernon only. Register by calling 800-626-9785 or at
  • Northwestern University Center for Public Safety also offers an Internet course - DDC-4 Internet Course. Offenders who receive a traffic ticket in Jefferson County are given the Internet course information after paying a traffic ticket in Jefferson County. Offenders who receive a traffic ticket in Crawford, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne or White Counties are authorized to complete the Internet course; however, they must telephone 800-626-9785 or email the Traffic Safety School to request the volunteer enrollment form. The Volunteer Enrollment Form may be printed off the Internet and sent to the Traffic Safety School. The following is more information about the Internet course:
    • How the Course Works - Students access the course via Internet on a computer at any time, day or night, after receiving assignment information and instructions from TSS. They can complete the course at one time, or log in numerous times to complete all sessions of the course. They must pass a post-test before they can finish the course. After they complete the course, a certificate of completion is mailed to the student's home address within 7-10 business days.
    • Student Enrollment - Students can register by using the Volunteer Enrollment form.
    • Student Notification - A special Internet assignment letter is sent to the student with a User ID and Password to access the course. Assignment letter will give a specific deadline date to complete the course.
    • Internet Helpline - Students can call TSS at 847-467-5240 or 800-626-9785 during business hours for information about or technical assistance with the Internet course. After business hours, they will be able to leave voicemail on the helpline for callbacks.
  • Eastern Illinois Community Colleges District 529 offers a 4-hour defensive driving classroom course. Register by calling 618-544-8252 ext. 1922
